Researching the Lower East Side in the School Library by 2-309

Class 2-309 completed the three steps of research about the Lower East Side in the school library. Here is what they learned!


The first step of research is what do I know. Here is what class 2-309 already knew about the Lower East Side.

Kaelyn - In the past, a lot people lived in little apartments.

Sinclair - The Lower East Side has the best Jewish food.

Mariam - In the past, almost 30 people lived in a small apartment.

Matthew - The Eldridge Street Synagogue was part of the Underground Railroad.

Davyn - There is famous food on the LES and people come from different countries to try it.

Yousef - The first people to come were the Lenape Tribe.

Anna - There’s a lot of graffiti on the Lower East Side.

Abdoul - Jewish people live on the LES.

Christian - In the past, the Jewish people went to the Lower East Side to live in there.


The second step of research is what do I wonder. These are the open-ended questions that class 2-309 asked about the Lower East Side.

Sinclair - Why is the food there so good?

Mariam - How many people live on the LES?

Matthew - Why is Chinatown on the LES?

Davyn - How many mythical creatures are on the LES? How many people live on the LES?

Yousef - What was the first thing they built on the LES?

Kaelyn - How do you get to the LES?

Anna - Why is the LES filled with small buildings?

Abdoul - How do you get to the LES?

Christian - What is the best restaurant on the LES?

Kylie - What was the first restaurant on the LES?

Jayce - How do you get to the LES?

Amari - What was the first museum on the LES?


The third step of research is searching for facts. First we use books and then we use computers. Here are the facts class 2-309 found when doing their research about the Lower East Side.

Matthew - The first Chinese people in New York were sailors. The Lower East Side is next to the East River. That is why Chinatown is on the Lower East Side.

Anna - The Lower East Side started out poor so they build tenements.

Yousef - The first thing they built on the Lower East Side were tenements or tiny places for people to live.

Sinclair, Christian, and Kylie - Yona Schimmel's Knishes is considered the best food on the Lower East Side. A knish is potato mixed with salt and pepper in a thin dough and baked or fried.

Mariam and Davyn - There are 171,103 people living on the Lower East Side.

Kaelyn, Abdul, and Jayce - To get to the Lower East Side from East Harlem, take the 6 train.

Amari - The first museum on the Lower East Side was the Eldridge Street Synagogue.
